by 2B site Webmaster on November 10, 2011

For our sex + health issue, which hits stands today, we wanted to do something simple and sexy with emerging queer artists, writers, and activists who have something to say. And what better than baring it all for them to show you what they got? Meet Conrad, Sarah, Elias, Mylène, (part 1)… Photos by César Ochoa and Keith Race.

Ryan Conrad Conrad is an artist, activist and academic who recently expatriated to Montréal from small-town Maine. He edited the anthology Against Equality: Queer Critiques of Gay Marriage, which made him a homo household name in 2010, and the follow-up Don’t Ask to Fight Their Wars will be released later this month. This second anthology gathers pieces by radical queer and trans anti-war voices critical of gay and lesbian efforts to overturn Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and of militarism more broadly. When not making video and photo works, Conrad can be found lounging at the Bain Colonial, or walking his dog, Digger.  www.againstequality.org

Sarah Bernard (The Salivation Army), Keith Race photo

Sarah Bernard (aka The Salivation Army) is a vocalist, guitarist, and self-described “SlutDJ” who spins more dance parties than you can shake an ass to. Having cut her DJ teeth spinning hip-hop and dancehall in Haiti, she moved to Montréal in 2006 and has been pumping out electro, kuduro, hip-hop, dancehall, and reggae, known to turn crowds at POMPe, LEG WORK, Ethnoculture and Faggity Ass Fridays into sweaty, hyper, hot messes. When not at the decks, she’ll take out her acoustic guitar (or saddle up to the piano) and serenade you with a genuine, proud, bluesy, queer Haitian voice (stay tuned for her EP Preservation, to be self-released later this year). soundcloud.com/thesalivationarmy

Elias Dean (Photo: César Ochoa)

Elias Dean is a translator and bon vivant living in Montréal. In his own words: “Though this country— and especially Québec— have been good to sexual minorities in the past, I feel that we have lost our edge.” He is currently involved in a legal battle to challenge the constitutionality of the Civil Code provision that demands that transgendered people undergo sterilization in order to obtain a legal sex change— “because no human being should have their bodily autonomy and reproductive rights held hostage by institutional demands.” You can follow Elias Dean’s story and the details of his upcoming civil suit at: www.eliasdeanchallenge.com

Mylène St-Pierre (Photo by Keith Race)

Mylène St-Pierre is a smut writer and spoken word performer currently working as the French language coordinator of AIDS Community Care Montréal’s Teachers’ Toolkit, a sex-ed programme for high school educators. With 12 years of alternative health promotion work under her belt—or, should we say, corset?—the “proud fattie” is also a board member at leatherdyke/transman org Unholy Army of the Night. The voluptuous dom will say to whomever wants to listen:

“Love the body you have, the day you have it!” – Mylène St-Pierre

You can read her sexy words (penname “Frenchie) in the “Voyeurism” edition of www.salaciousmagazine.com     /    www.sexedtoolkit.com
