Hot off the heels of celebrating its official launch a few weeks back, Apollon is set to sail its maiden voyage into 2012 with local house deity Stephan Grondin at the helm. Basking in its ‘fresh meat’ status, Apollon’s philosophy of promoting local talent in a venue fit for the international pool of DJ’s is like rolling a hard six to say the least. While the venue boasts splashy aesthetics and world-like class, Apollon’s management has re-directed its investment towards gaining new ground for the city’s DJ talent. Grondin is a welcomed addition to the roster that rotates on the CDJ’s at the pillar’d boite de nuit. Having recently spun in South America and Mexico for Karmabeat’s 5th Anniversary, Grondin is primed to lay his signature sound to test at the club’s sound system on the 31st. Tickets are $25 loons at the door. www.apollonmtl.com
Not one to be out-done, Montréal’s afterhours mecca, Stereo, continues the party with its shimmery-themed NYE event, celebrating all that is gold. “In Gold We Trust” will bring the bling to the blessed dancefloor with D-Formation from Spain serving the beats. D-Formation is no stranger to the dancefloors of Montreal as he has doled out his big-room, progressive house hymns to thousands at a few Black & Blue’s, while keeping the dance music pundits at Stereo giddy during his numerous visits to the city.
Day One
A smart disco nap, costume change and you are now ready to start 2012 off fresh. And for this, Apollon enlisted the help of the Matinée Group, otherwise known as the internationally renowned promotional vehicle for some of the world’s biggest circuit parties, to endorse their ‘better living through circuit(ry)’. DJ Jordi Lights, a resident DJ with the Matinée Group hailing from Barcelona, makes an appearance on decks and cover is $25 at the door.
Aptly entitled Day One, Stereo continues in its fine tradition of offering a respectable chaser for the previous evening’s revelry. No filler here, Day One continues the gold theme with “Oh My Gold” bringing back the charismatic duo of Chus & Ceballos to dish out us those Iberican beats we have all come to call our own.

Once the dust has settled…
What happens when you take Montréal’s perennial summertime outdoor attraction, Piknic Electronik and smack it down in the Old Port during the unholy depths of the winter season? In its sixth edition, Igloofest 2011 promises even more music, more sizzle, more sparkle and more wacky fun. This year, the event is spaced out over nine nights featuring the darling’s of the electronic dance music scene, audio-visual orgasms and even a ski-suit competition – all set in the unbeatable, Igloofest rave-y, multi-media-soaked, winter wonderland.
Spreading like two sticks of buttah over three days for four consecutive weekends, Igloofest has got Teifschwarz taking it a bit deeper on January 13th on the Sapporo stage. The duo comprising of brothers Alexander “Ali” and Sebastian “Basti” Schwarz, were in their prime in the mid 2000’s remixing acts like Madonna, Goldfrapp and Depeche Mode. Things will get ‘hot in herre’ with Juno Award winner and Montreal’s very own godfather of tech house Tiga, making a rare appearance to the main stage on the 19th. Max Cooper brings his blend of hypnotic techno along with French house DJ and producer, Sébastien Léger to the Sapporo stage on the 21st. The ever-cutting-edge Diplo brings his brand of booty-shaking ‘Brazilian baile funk’ to Igloofest on January 26th while the camera will be prepared to flash when Green Velvet take to the Sapporo stage on the 27th.
Also on the 27th, Igloofest and Bench clothing have also launched what is being touted as their first edition of an international competition for DJs. Once the selection has been made, the winner will be flown in and have the opportunity to play a 90-minute set opening for Green Velvet.
Stay warm kids.
