RGmag 30th anniversary party shakes up the Écomusée

For the occasion of its milestone ruby anniversary, RGmag brought out the GLBT community in spades, fêting former editor-in-chief Alain Bouchard along with current publisher André Gagnon and a host of luminaries from the arts and non-profit sector.

At 30 years old, 2B‘s sister publication RGmag is the oldest continuously published gay monthly in Canada, and the second oldest French language mag of homosexual persuasion in the world! To celebrate, the collected staff of Entre Elles, Être and 2B mounted an exhibit of archival issues, framed art by César Ochoa and Marc-André Goulet, and a dedicatory series of panels of our “Top 30″ personalities that have marked the GLBT scene since RG‘s founding in 1981.

Artists, contributors, and community figures literally took the cake (and the Domaine Pinnacle apple cider), posing for photos by painter Jean Chaîney, who was present as a photographer for the evening. Yunus Chkirate met up with buddy Yvon Goulet (above), whose portrait of Paul Haince featured in the “30 Personalities” panels.

Former cover-boy and long-time RG favourite DJ B’UGO took the night off to join the crowd instead of being stuck behind the decks, while out queer musician Matt Stern gave some beautiful renditions of Québec folk and pop songs, while we enjoyed the exhibit and the people-watching. It never ceases to amaze me how well these nocturnal kids mingle with their gay elders, like Laurent McCutcheon from Fondation Émergence, and the heart-warming Hector Gomez from Au-delà de l’Arc-en-ciel.

Now, name-dropping aside, it was a huge night for in-house photographer and artistic director César Ochoa, whose tireless work for Être and RG has transformed its aesthetic over the last 5 years. His stunning photo works hung in a grotto all his own, and featured a dramatic portrait mise-en-scène by stylist, model and unself-conscious scenster Tristan Harris.

By the time RG founder Alain Bouchard and current publisher André Gagnon took the mic for their speeches, which highlighted the importance of a free gay press in an era of pendulous homophobia, the crowd had mingled and guzzled enough to make the voluminous Écomusée du fier monde into an oasis of sorts, from the encroaching cold and Harperian world outside.

With RG’s 30th anniversary now reaching its culmination, the next challenge will be to see how we can outdo it with 2B‘s 10th anniversary edition, which is coming up in May, 2012.

The exhibit is on display until this Sunday, December 11th at the

Écomusée du fier monde, 2050 rue Amherst
