Though he dearly misses his home island of Guadeloupe in the French Antilles, owner Cydric Fereol pays homage to it with Saveur Soleil, his charming “Village-adjacent” eatery. Having immigrated to Canada in 2004, this young man of 25 who studied management and computers, decided to pursue a lifelong dream.
Coming from a family where everyone loved to cook, he decided to get into the restaurant business, offering authentic dishes from his island – a first in Montréal. At lunchtime, the bokits are fantastic Bokits are Guadeloupian sandwiches made with chicken, cod, sausage, or vegetarian versions. In the evening, try the colombo, a delicious coconut curry named after the city in Sri Lanka where the spices traditionally come from, or the fricassée de lambis (photo), made with lambis, a delectable crustacean that is a speciality of creole cuisine. We can also highly recommend the gambas à la creole, a spicy jumbo shrimp dish.
Warm and friendly atmosphere
The decor at Saveur Soleil is simple and warm. Photos of the Island adorn the walls and world music adds to the West Indies atmosphere, augmented by live concerts on Saturdays. The ambiance is familiar and familial – with the owner’s own parents cooking in the kitchen.
The restaurant also offers catering services as well as cooking workshops (monthly or bi-weekly), with a focus on a particular food (bread, fish, and also… pumpkin!). The workshop calendar is available online at mcc972.com.
For the holidays, Saveur Soleil will have a festive Guateloupean atmosphere by having a Christmas song night, after which the Caribbean vibes will blessedly return during those frosty January nights. Bon bokit!
