Sweet 300: a new Shame-Free Sexy Space in the 613

In an increasingly trendy, but still thankfully real stretch of Montreal Road in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood, Sweet 300 has started something that just might tickle the fancy in this whitest of white-collar towns (what with all those lonely Conservative MP’s!): a new generation sex complex.

In an increasingly trendy, but still thankfully real stretch of Montreal Road in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood, a new addition to the naughtiness of the Capital sex scene has just opened its doors. Owned and operated by Patrick Campeau, the upfront nightlife baron who made his reputation with the Portage Ave. hot-spot Le Pub (back when Ottawa bars closed at 1AM and gays would flock across the Gatineau River to party till 3), Sweet 300 has started something that just might tickle the fancy of the white-collar townies: a new generation sex complex.

We have two separate theatres to cater to both gay and straight clients,” Campeau explained while we took a tour on a chilly Wednesday afternoon. “Our theatres play adult movies all day long. We have two peep show rooms which feature exotic models, teases, prop shows, and burlesque,” he says smiling. With his delightful promoter, Marie-Paule, we got a sneak peak at the private rooms, which contain a leather love seat, a big screen TV, and a large selection of adult movies. Leveraging the fact that Campeau’s “burlesque entertainment” bar downstairs has been known for years for its above-the-board low profile, the SWEET 300 team is walking a very contemporary line between the showy and the discreet.

We cater to the high class sex client,” says Campeau, but that doesn’t mean it’s pretentious. On the contrary, the staff are smiley, and the viewing rooms are almost cosy, with sophisticated dark brown leather armchairs, cherry-red enamelled doors, and a vibe that feels more like a private film club than a typical sex shop.

One of the elements I liked most was that when you go to choose which film you want to view, either alone or in the Cinemaxxx mini-theatre, you can just say “one” or “two”, with 1 being the hetero erotica, and 2 being the man-on-man movie. “That way you can view what turns you on without having to be overt,” Marie-Paule chimed. As an establishment with lots of rooms to choose from, they also want the place to be known as a perfectly cool place to meet up with someone you meet online, or someone you want to watch sexy stuff with. “It’s a meeting place,” Campeau proffers, reminiscing about his days as the owner of Le Pub across the River. “Gay, lesbian, bi and trans people are great clients! They don’t want or cause any trouble, they just want to be themselves, which is something our straight clients can do here too. I always respected my LGBT friends and customers for that,” he said, winning me over completely.

With an ample selection of adult toys, condoms, aphrodisiacs, lubricants (CumShot was proudly on display!), massage oils, fetish gear, and “novelty” items, the Boutixxx acts as a foyer for their low-lit lounge, and those uncannily welcoming little rooms. As far as I’m concerned, “Shame-Free Space” should be the sign above the door at this sleek new playground for the randy and curious alike.
