Gossip’s new dance anthem: “Move in the Right Direction”

We can’t help but see possible pro-strike applications in Gossip’s new single from their album Joyful Noise. “Hold back tears, so I can move in the right direction…” Beth Ditto belts. Check it out!

Maybe it’s Beth Ditto’s red dress and the inspiring lyrics, but we can’t help but read into Gossip’s new single certain (accidental) pro-strike messages. While the first single from their Joyful Noise album, “Perfect World” was a darker rock-religious number, “Move in the Rights Direction” has a sweet British New Wave lilt and infectious dance beat. The futuristic fag back-up dancers (maybe a couple of the same from “Perfect World”?) will make you want to get outta your chair and dance!

Hailing from Olympia, Georgia, Beth Ditto’s 3-piece is omnipresent right now. After opening the Cannes Film Festival this month, the hype around their Joyful Noise is sure to get another kick from this Pet-Shop-Boys-esque new video. Clearly, the proliferation of web ads and high-profile appearances means the band is hoping to break out of its queer niche market and find more mainstream audiences. The length and relative simplicity of “Move in the Right Direction” suggest that it’s poised for commercial radio play. Released on May 16, Joyful Noise has already appeared on several “best” lists for the month, with positive reviews for the two singles as wells as the more overtly political “Get a Job” and “Casualties of War”.

But seriously, it’s the lyrics, colours and beats that have us hooked this time. “Moving forward with all of my might, I’m getting tough with my new state of mind / Face my fears… Move in the right direction” love it! You can just imagine banging your pots to this beat as you meet up with your friends for one of the “casserole” street marches this weekend.
