Transgender ID and Air Travel: the CQGL steps up the fight

The Council of Québec Gays and Lesbians (CGQL) says that it is prepared to file formal complaints against Transport Canada for the rules instituted by the Conservatives for ID checks on the gender and appearance of airline passengers. The advocacy group requested a legal opinion on the matter several weeks ago. Interview with the CQGL’s Julie-Maude Beauchesne.

For the 22nd annual Quebec Suicide Prevention Week (from February 5-11), the AQPS (Association québécoise pour la prevention du suicide) is sending a message: “Here, we value every life, and suicide is not an option.” This Tuesday at a press conference, the organisation also expressed their desire to put more emphasis on suicide prevention for the LGBT population.

Though the announcement was made last May, Premier Jean Charest was nonetheless on hand at the Écomusée du Fier Monde Monday (Nov. 28) to announce the creation of a Homophobia Research Chair. The Chair will be led by Line Chamberland, professor of sexology at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), and will first research homophobia`s effects on health and how it contributes to social exclusion.

When Québec’s Minister of Justice Marc Fournier finally announced his government’s anti-homophobia action plan in May, it was praised for including a $7.1 million injection of cash over five years. Of this overall total, an amount of $400,000 has been set aside for the first year, with individuals and community groups invited to apply for up to $50,000 in funding by Dec. 1st.

When the Council of Québec Gays and Lesbians (CQGL) found out arch-conservative Islamic figures Hazma Tzortzis and Abdur Raheem Green were coming to Canada to speak at a conference in Montréal, they sent a letter asking for Minister Jason Kenney to reject their visa applications. As of Friday, Kenney had still failed to reply.

Years in the making, the Action plan to fight homophobia was finally unveiled today by Justice Minister Jean-Marc Fournier and key community members who consulted on the government’s Plan de lutte contre l’homophobie. The plan sets out a diverse set of action items including funding increases to community organizations, a Research Chair at UQÀM, and the creation of a Bureau for combatting homophobia.
