Ottawa’s gayest condo a source of heated controversy

Central Condo—Ottawa’s gayest and swankiest condo located at Bank and Gladstone—has been a source of controversy in town. Anti-poverty activists crashed last week’s launch party and clashed with police. They’re angry at the gentrification of Ottawa and claim the developers, Urban Capital Property Group, are pushing affordable housing out of the neighbourhood, decrying the residents as “social elites.”

Every year the Ottawa Fringe Festival, the region’s largest theatre festival, plays host theatrical productions from around the world. This year the festival is taking over downtown with 12 venues and over 50 shows from all over the world.

When you go to C.C. Trubiak’s website, the first thing you see is a Joe Dallessandro/Peter Berlin-inspired photograph of the musician’s lower torso and crotch. The “Enter” icon wittily appears as your cursor hovers over the fly in his jeans. “One day, I hope I will actually want to live.” Just two weeks before he killed himself, Jamie Hubley, 15, made that post to his Tumblr account. Jamie, the son of Kanata South Councillor Allan Hubley, had long dealt with depression; his public struggle was documented almost daily on his blog which has since been removed. Now, school boards must come to terms with the impact that homophobic bullying has on their students.

“Yes, a village is here!” proudly announced Glenn Crawford, Village Committee chair at the unveiling of the “We Demand” mural on Friday, August 26 on Bank and Gilmour Street. The mural designed and painted by artists from Falldown Gallery celebrates 40 years of queer civil rights activism and portrays the first LGBT demonstration held on August 28, 1971.
